What causes the oxygen to drop in an aquatic ecosystem?

The main reason why oxygen drops in aquatic systems is that oxygen is not very soluble in water. Oxygen is only able to diffuse well from the atmosphere into the top layer of water, so deep water has low levels of oxygen.
