I'm looking for winter boots that are fashionable, yet warm enough to survive my harsh winters.?

NOT UGGs, I'm vegetarian and I think they're hideous. But what kind of boots do New Yorkers wear? I've worn such ugly boots in the past. Does anyone have any suggestions?
